WE BELIEVE that the Bible, in its entirety, is divine revelation, and we submit to the authority of Holy Scripture, acknowledging it to be infallible, inspired by God, without error, and carrying the full weight of His authority, and therefore it alone is the standard for faith and practice.
WE BELIEVE in one God eternally existing in three co-equal, co-eternal persons, namely the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as seen in Scripture.
WE BELIEVE that God created man in His own image, and has called him to manifest and reflect holiness through obedience to his commandments. Because man has failed in this responsibility, and refused to honor God as God, man has fallen into a state of moral corruption, and has become alienated from his creator. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love, has initiated a plan of redemption and reconciliation for mankind. The pinnacle of which is found in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the incarnation of God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary, being at the same time fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life, was crucified, died, and was buried. On the third day after His death, He rose again, and ascended into heaven, and now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, and He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
WE BELIEVE Jesus Christ, through His substitutionary, atoning death and bodily resurrection, has provided the basis of our justification, which, by God’s grace we receive by faith alone. God initiates this reconciliation through the regeneration of our hearts, which is witnessed by our repentance and confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our great hope is the redemption of our bodies through resurrection to eternal life, which will complete our adoptions as sons. As the supernatural and sovereign Agent in regeneration, the Holy Spirit baptizes all believers into the Body of Christ at the moment of salvation. He dwells in the hearts of every believer, effecting their regeneration, operating in their sanctification, instructing them into all truth, and sealing them until the day of redemption.
WE BELIEVE that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:18-25; Matthew 19:3-6; ). Any form of sexual intimacy outside the proscribed bonds of marriage is prohibited by God in his law (see Leviticus 18) and in his gospel (see Romans 1:24-27; 1 Corinthians 5-6). God offers grace and mercy to people that commit such sins if they will repent and believe, and calls his people to compassion and kindness towards such persons. Any hateful or harassing behavior is unbecoming of Christians who, but for the grace of God, would be under their same condemnation. However, because of our convictions on this matter, we reserve the right to decline the request of any person to use Alta Vista Bible Church facilities, property, or pastoral staff for a ceremony when, in our judgment, there are significant concerns that one or both of the applicants may not be qualified to enter into the sacred union of marriage for theological, doctrinal, moral or legal reasons (Hebrews 13:4).
WE BELIEVE that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life (Psalm 139).
WE BELIEVE that the membership of this Church shall be composed of individuals who are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and affirm the tenets of the Statement of Faith and who offer evidence, by their confession and their conduct, that they are living in accord with the Scriptures.
WE BELIEVE the Elders are leaders in the church and are the ones who interpret the Statement of Faith and the practice of church discipline according to Matthew 18; 1 Corinthians 5; and Titus 3, being able to revoke membership to those who live in such a way that demonstrates unrepentant sin and wanton disregard for the church’s pursuit of holiness.
In addition to this statement of faith, we uphold the creeds of early Christendom, including the Apostles’, Nicene, Athanasian, and Chalcedonian. We also believe the confessions of faith produced during the Reformation are generally reliable guides to the Christian faith, among them the Westminster Confession and Catechisms, the London Baptist Confession, the Canons of Dordt, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Belgic Confession.
